Animal Welfare 101
(for Developers and Citizens, too!)

ECARD cares about our Florida Wildlife. When we see a gopher tortoise run over by the treads of a bulldozer, we know that the builder doesn't understand their responsibility to these animals, or what these animals do for us as citizens of Florida. If they knew how important these little critters are to our ecosystems, they would probably think and act otherwise.

If you want to learn about a developer's responsibility to our little carapaced friends, go here and read up on it:

In April of 2007, the world's largest known Gopher Tortoise was crushed to death (buried alive) at a construction site in Fort Myers Florida. His age was estimated to be between 50 and 100 years old. Read about "Phoenix" here:

  • If you want to be overrun by mice and rats, kill every snake you see,
  • If you want to be eaten alive by mosquitoes, kill all the spiders and spray various poisons randomly throughout your environment to kill their natural enemies,
  • If you want to live a very boring, poison-filled, lonely life, cover every square mile of your town with buildings and roads, and make sure every road is solidly congested 4 hours out of every business day (and all day Saturday, too).
No one wants these things to happen, but most of our actions around our homes and in our towns have very measurable, and often negative effects on our environment, and, some of the things we do affect us in ways we never imagined.

The Native Americans knew something that we just can't seem to get through our heads. This is that Nature and our environment must be treated with respect or it will come back to haunt us. Many of the "pests" that we kill may well be the ones that feed on the carriers of diseases like West Nile virus.Get to know your environment and try to learn what effects your actions may have on all of us.

Information on other animals will be added as we find reputable sources of information on them
(and we get the time to update these pages).
